Established in 1872, The Newton Kansan is a five-day-a-week newspaper, printed more than 250 times each year. The paper serves Harvey County, Kansas, and is located in Newton, the county seat.

Newton is proud of its heritage. The city was founded in 1871 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended a main line from Emporia westward to Newton. The town soon became an important railroad shipping point of Texas cattle — and became part of Wild West lore. While the railroad is now known as the BNSF Railway, most locals still refer to it as the “Santa Fe.”
