GateHouse Media papers named among best in state in Ohio Associated Press Media Editors competition


A big congratulations to the teams at The (Canton) Repository and The Columbus Dispatch, which were recently recognized as being among the best in the state at the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors competition.

The Repository was honored with a general excellence award in its division in addition to the 33 individual awards its staff received.

The Dispatch was honored with a general excellence award in its division in addition to the recognition it received for its website and the first-place awards it earned for both its daily sports section, for a special sports section on college football and for its public service reporting on suicide. Its staff also received a number of individual awards.

Shawnee News-Star recognized by Oklahoma journalism associations

Congratulations to the entire Shawnee News-Star team, which was recently honored by the Associated Press/Oklahoma News Executives and The Society of Professional Journalists Oklahoma Pro Chapter.

The newsroom received a first-place award for its website, which on average receives 350,000 page views a month, and placed fourth in the General Excellence category from the AP.

Individual awards were received by Tina Bridenstine, who placed third in Page 1 deadline layout; Ed Blochowiak, who placed fourth in sports photography; and Kim Morava, who placed fourth in spot news reporting.

The Society of Professional Journalists awarded photographer Ed Blochowiak first place and sports editor Billy Brown second place for sports photography. Kent Bush earned a third-place award for his personal columns.

The News-Star was also presented with the Jerry Marx Memorial Award by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety/Oklahoma Highway Patrol in recognition of traffic safety stories.

Director, Information Technology – Columbus, Ohio

GateHouse Media is searching for a Director, Information Technology, with responsibility for support for multiple properties, interfacing with the Regional and Local publishers and with the Corporate and local IT staffs to provide remote and on-site support for the designated properties.

Under general direction of the VP, Information Technology, this position plans, organizes and directs the IT activities for a specified geographic region for GateHouse Media. The position works closely with a peer group of IT Directors to ensure that processes and operations are consistent and leveraged as appropriate. The position also works closely with the corporate IT Shared Services team to coordinate application support and integration into other standard infrastructure and systems, supporting the pre-defined strategies and plans.

The position reports to the VP, Information Technology to develop plans and budgets for local contracts and resources with the goal of reducing expenses and to provide appropriate IT support to revenue generating opportunities.

The Director, IT has supervisory responsibility for staff members supporting field resources in the local properties and as an onsite point for Corporate application and infrastructure employees who are working out of those locations. This position is based in Columbus, Ohio.

Successful project execution of implementing the standard software/hardware in the field will be a key activity for this role, working closely with the corporate IT directors to prioritize projects and align local and corporate resources. This individual will have responsibility for leading projects within and external to his/her organization. Support of local systems varies based on the non-common systems implemented at the local properties and the complexity of production and distribution requirements at those locations.

Merger and acquisition related experience is highly valued in this role.

Additional qualifications include:

  • A minimum of ten or more years professional experience in the media industry
  • At least 5 years experience in a senior management level position
  • Deep understanding of core newspaper business systems across advertising, circulation and finance
  • Specific knowledge and experience with digital advertising platforms
  • Strong industry vendor relationships across core newspaper business systems
  • Exceptional communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization
  • Strong track record of managing multiple priorities and competing demands
  • Strong computer skills with advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Undergraduate degree is required in a technical discipline. MS or MBA is a plus

Executive Assistant to President – Las Vegas, Nevada 

Perform varied, complex and highly confidential administrative work requiring a high degree of judgment and knowledge of the organization’s mission statement, policies, practices and procedures to include typing correspondence, screening phone calls and incoming mail, greeting business associates, making arrangements for meetings and other various duties to support the executive’s successful completion of goals and objectives. Organize seminars/workshops/meetings and project work without supervision. Exercise discretion in performing job functions. Maintain complex and sensitive information.

(1) Plan, format and type correspondence, records, reports and other materials, some of a highly confidential nature (including salaries and performance ratings), from documents, dictation, longhand or rough copy notes.

(2) Obtain manual and computer statistical information; compile data; set up and maintain confidential records, reports and files. Follow up on request from colleagues/managers and supply information that is within scope of authority.

(3) Screen phone calls and take messages, place and return calls within limits of executive’s calendar which contains appointment, meetings conference and travel itineraries which include notifying appropriate parties and greeting visitors.

(4) Manage office workflow and administration such as maintaining supply inventory, keeping expense accounts other records up to date. Attend and record minutes of executive committee meetings. Serve as liaison between executives and GHM MA properties.

(5) Develop and maintain relationship with the public including local business and community organizations.

(6) Perform a variety of additional duties to support company and departmental goals, including, but not limited to scheduling and planning periodic employee meetings, luncheons and local operating committee meetings. Making decisions to support managers as needed.

(7) Facilitate communication between multiple properties/management across the entire country both written and through telecommunication. Work to develop systems to streamline communication and efficiencies in the gathering and dissemination of information.

Minimum 2-year Associates degree in business/marketing equivalent work experience.

5 or more years’ administrative experience. Industry experience in media, sales or marketing helpful

Ability to work independently and follow through on projects with a minimum of specific instruction. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline- oriented environment. Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of one relevant professional certification- (CISSP, MCSD, GIAC, or CEH preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or the equivalent work experience is required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Information security certifications, such as CISSP, CISM, or equivalent preferred. Information systems auditing certification such as CISA or GISA is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of six years of prior work experience in information security is required.
  • Must have experience with common information security management frameworks.
  • Track record of planning and executing complex work efforts.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, analysis, and writing skills.
  • Strong leadership skills including ability to work effectively with business unit managers and information technology and information technology operations staff and the ability to lead in a matrix environment is required.

Congratulations to the team at The (Stockton) Record, which recently received a total of 25 awards at the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2015 Better Newspaper Contest.

Alex Breitler received five honors, including first place in Business Reporting category and second in the Writing category and earned honorable mentions in Sports Game Story, Environmental Reporting and Agriculture Reporting.

Mike Klocke received two awards, including first place in Column Writing and second place in Editorial Writing.

Lori Gilbert won first place in Profile Feature Story and an honorable mention in Writing.

The Record’s sports department received three second-place awards, including Special Section, Thomas Lawrence’s Sports Game Story award and Kelly Jones’ Sports Feature Story award. The team received honorable mentions in Best Overall Sports Section, for Bob Highfill’s Sports Feature and for Lawrence for Sports Game Story.
